Dubai is the largest city in the United Arab Emirates and its number one tourist destination. With a population of over 2 million people, Dubai is a sizeable city and has a thriving tourism industry, seeing visitors from all over the world arriving each year. The city has an interesting blend of contemporary shopping opportunities, ancient historical sites and modern tourist attractions.

First of all, travelling to Dubai is easily done with Dubai International Airport having routes to over 260 destinations around the world. Most visitors from Europe and many other parts of the world can arrive without obtaining a Visa beforehand, simply having their passports stamped and allowed to enjoy the country for up to 90 days. You can then happily leave the airport and travelled to your accommodation, which generally tends to be a very high standard.

Shopping tourism is certainly one of the premier attractions of visiting Dubai with the city often being referred to as the Shopping Capital of the Middle East. When it comes to shopping in Dubai you have two main options; first of all you have the many modern shopping malls, boutiques, department stores and electronics shops in which everything is sold at a set price as you are probably used to. However, visitors then have the option of visiting the Souk districts where almost anything is available and shopkeepers are happy to negotiate price in a friendly fashion.

Of course, being the Middle East, there are certain cultural differences which visitors must be aware of. Public activities such as dancing, drinking and even public displays of affection are not tolerated and women are expected to dress quite conservatively. Reading up on the cultural differences on the flight over should be enough to keep you out of trouble!

On a cultural level, Dubai has an Old City and Heritage Village which are excellent for learning about the history of the area. Dubai Museum is housed in an 18th-century fort and there are many old mosques scattered around with their detailed decoration and minarets.
